Red Bull Music Academy

This is something I stumbled on a few years ago, after seeing a link in the Ableton Live forum.
Red Bull of course is the ubiquitous energy drink. Mixed with vodka (“the Vodka Bully”) it used to be particularly popular with some club goers. (I personally think it tastes a little foul; I much prefer something [...]

Some new random thoughts on Csound

I’ve been going through the “Csound Catalog” CD (which I think I mention elsewhere). As an educational and tutorial resource it’s great. However, I have to say I don’t think it’s very well organized, and the documentation in the individual instruments ranges from sketchy at best to nonexistent at worst. So I’m gradually going through [...]

A quick note on this blog’s formatting…

I’ve been doing a little housekeeping on this blog. Mainly, I discovered a service called pastebin (www.pastebin.com) which allows me to post small and large snippets of code. You can then open them in a separate window which makes it much easier to follow along with the articles here.
You can see all the various pieces I’ve posted [...]

More on “Deep Note”

First of all, thanks to Steven Yi for his comment on the previous post about Deep Note (the THX sound). For those of you who don’t know, he’s a Csound master and author of a timeline based composition environment for Csound called Blue (see http://www.csounds.com/stevenyi/blue/index.html)
Meanwhile I’ve continued my experimentation with the Hans Mikelson instrument gran2. [...]

The most famous piece of computer music…

….is probably the huge sound effect that plays in the movie theater when the THX logo comes on. Well, maybe it’s not really a piece of music as a sound effect, or more properly an audio logo.
Going through the Csound instrument demos files, I found one by Hans Mikelson which is supposedly intended to show [...]

Csound manual: 2385 pages

This totally boggled my brain. The PDF of the reference manual for Csound 5.06 (available here) is 2385 pages! At first I thought that was a typo, but I downloaded the file and it sure is.
So that ought to provide even the most ambitious user with plenty of fodder for a long time.
I just got [...]

Maybe you’re ALREADY writing programs…

Following up on discussions that are taking place on the csound forums at nabble.com…there was some discussion about creating music with computer programs.
Consider the following. A piece of of sheet music is actually a program in itself: it’s a list of instructions to a player about which notes to play, at which volume, for how long [...]
